About Behar

Queen Elizabeth
II’s Coronation window at Behar, Bath Street, Glasgow, June
1953.
The business was founded in 1920 by Victor Isaac Behar, an expert in Oriental carpet restoration, when he opened a small shop in Sauchiehall Street near to Charing Cross, in Glasgow, selling and repairing Oriental carpets and rugs. Over the next 87 years, the business has grown beyond Victor Behar’s wildest imagination with stores and superstores throughout Scotland and a further branch at Petts Wood in Kent. Behar’s spectacular growth can be attributed in part to a refusal to depart from Victor Behar’s founding principles of honesty, integrity and professionalism.
So what are the other ‘secrets’ of Behar’s success?
Firstly, we have shown enviable resilience to the increasingly aggressive conditions within the market that we operate in and we have never compromised on the founding principles and values that have underpinned our business.
Secondly, at Behar, we are good at what we do. We have a hard-won and well deserved fund of customer trust and goodwill and we expect everyone within the company to guard this fund with great care. As a consequence of this commitment – we believe that few of our competitors can hope to match us.
Thirdly, Behar is innovative and always in the vanguard of new ideas. We have embraced the e-revolution with vigour and enthusiasm and every part of our business is complemented with advanced information and communication systems.
Next, we are socially responsible, committed to conducting everything that we do with full regard for our customers, our staff and our suppliers. We recognise too, that good environmental practice is good business practice and reduce, reuse and recycle are our operational watchwords.
Finally, we recognise that we are only as good as the people whom we ask to deliver the Behar customer experience – our staff. We select the best, invest in their training and development and recognise and reward them to ensure that they live the values of the brand that is Behar and contribute to our ongoing success. We have a strong commitment to equal opportunities and we believe that everyone benefits from a fear-free working environment where respect for the individual is actively encouraged.
