About the University

University of the Arts London brings together five of the world's most prestigious Colleges for art, design and communications. Formerly grouped together as The London Institute, they enjoy an excellent international reputation, drawing students from around the world.

They also benefit from strong links with practitioners working in related professions - employing over 2000 of them as part-time Associate Lecturers. Operating with considerable autonomy, the Colleges have responsibilities ranging from course delivery and development, to staff development and resources management.

Development is a core strength and spans both academic and administrative functions. For example the University has invested over £3 million in an IT network linking all sites, while at the same time investing £1.5 million to enhance its research profile undertaking a series of diverse projects including Virtual Reality, Design for Dance, Conservation, and Design for Disability, and results in a five rating in the Research Assessment Exercise.

To continue with this level of investment, the University must be financially successful and with an income of about £90 million, it has generated surpluses of at least £1 million in each of the last five years.

The University also has an annual income from overseas activities in excess of £20 million, while the commercial arm, Development at The London Institute (DALI), has a turnover of over £4 million making it one of the most successful commercial operations in Higher Education.

The University's head office is in Davies Street, also home to the Arts Gallery - the largest exhibition space in Mayfair, and a focal point for the work of staff and students from across the University.
