Jacqui Adams
Careers advisor
Student Services
Coming to University of the Arts London was an ideal way for me to utilise all my skills. I have an art background, a fine art degree and I'm a qualified Careers Advisor, so when the opportunity arose it was logical for me to apply.
Working here has exposed me to a unique diversity of work. Yes I'm helping graduates cope with issues - balancing financial hardship with making a creative living and finding work among other things, but there is more activity required to support those entering the creative industries.

We're recognising areas of specific importance - for example coping with a sense of isolation and de-motivation is common in arts graduates once they leave their College. While they are here they are part of a unique culture and innovative environment that enables proactive working. So we have to demonstrate that rather than expecting work to come to them, art graduates need to find ways to support themselves through art. It's interesting to note that a substantially higher number of art graduates are self-employed than those with more traditional qualifications.
And on a more personal note, I'm working in a place where the students and graduates create a culture open to developing new ideas. I have the benefit of access to exhibitions and courses - which is wonderful. Of course anyone can go to an exhibition but here it is just so easy.
