Technical Manager
Central St Martins

I had a creative history before joining University of the Arts London - I studied theatre at Croydon College (Fairfield Halls) and I worked in Film, TV and Theatre. I was also running my own workshops and a friend suggested I could use my skills in a teaching environment, so when a vacancy arose at the University it seemed a great opportunity to share my skills and knowledge at a prestigious art college.

It's an ongoing debate as to whether technicians are teachers or not, and I like to think we have a huge amount to offer students. I also think that most technicians see themselves as teachers - we direct, we advise, and give counsel. Our job is to make sure that the students' designs can be realized, and many technicians are practicing artists in their own right.

If you compare us to the 'theatre industry' we mirror new technical developments, In terms of creativity and experimentation of the use of space, language, text and design, we are well ahead. That's because we're always exploring different ways of presenting shows and of exploring audience participation. We dare to be daring - and that's from the students' desires and enthusiasm.

That's a big part of why I've been so happy here - the course is always developing and changing. I'm always learning and finding new challenges. I've also learned a great deal from the students because they all have their own views and unique perspectives - often these are cultural differences due the fact that we have so many international students.

University of the Arts London is an intense, inventive environment. Non-stop creativity. Formulating new ways of thinking, looking at and creating art.
